Adventures in quilting

November 05, 2012 / 1 Comment

Making a quilt” has been on my list to accomplish for this year and since it’s November I’m cutting in kinda close. I picked out my pretty fabrics and will cheat just a little bit by making a pillow instead.

small payday loans very cheap

I may be getting ahead of myself thinking I can just sew this thing without any instructions but I’m going to try. It seems fairly easy and straight-forward, cutting shapes and sewing them together. Wish me luck!

Handmade pom pom garland for Fall!

October 11, 2012 / 1 Comment

Decorating for Fall has been really fun for me this year. I’m hoping to throw in a few more Halloween-y touches here and there, orange and black is a good direction, right?

I’ve seen these cute garland cutouts and might give it a shot!

I thought I posted this but looks like not. I made this pom pom garland with bright colors for above my bed. Using a pom pom maker has been so fun and easy, I might have to create a pom pom garland for every holiday because these things are addicting!

Decal iPhone case DIY

September 27, 2012 / Leave a comment?

I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out black decals for some blank iPhone cases. This is sort of a hit and miss because the decal can easily peel off and doesn’t stick too well on the rounded corners. However, it did produce some cute covers that I can switch out from time to time!

I may be trying the clear case DIY idea next so I can switch out printed things and pictures just by cutting them out and placing inside. So simple and costs close to nothing.

What’s your phone look like these days?

DIY: Leopard heart t-shirt

August 22, 2012 / Leave a comment?

Materials: plain t-shirt ($3.99), leopard square (or any other print) ($.99), pins, needle & thread, scissors, paper or cardboard for a template

Fold your paper in half and draw a half heart, cut around the line you drew – this will create a perfect heart shape. Note: make sure your paper and fabric are big enough for each other and also big enough for your t-shirt.

Pin the template to your fabric and cut around the shape.

Next, pin your fabric heart to your t-shirt – measure or eyeball it in the middle or where you like it best. Then sew! I opted to hand stitching my heart on, it would have been too much hassle with a machine, but feel free to use what you’re comfortable with.

And wear!

DIY Dotted Inspiration

August 21, 2012 / Leave a comment?

Inspired by DOTS lately – I’ve been seeing this ‘technique’ all over Pinterest and other blogs as well and wanted to try it sooo badly! Not much to it, just as simple and effortless as it looks :)

Here’s my DIYed dotted wall as inspired by the ones above. The cost of this project was a whopping $5.23 – that’s the cost of the black vinyl on sale. I cut my 2 inch circles with my Silhouette Cameo cutter and just stuck them on where I liked.

Ten or fifteen minute fun project to decorate the wall, if I get bored all I have to do is peel of the stickers. I get a big grin every time I look at it :)

Maxi skirt surgery

July 31, 2012 / Leave a comment?

I thrifted this extra-extra-large leopard/animal print skirt maybe a year ago, I could wear it since it had a tie-string but all that extra fabric really weighted it down.

So finally I got my sewing cap on and cut off a huge chunk (practically in the middle) and made one simple stitch to patch it back up.

No tie-string necessary…

Originally, this was supposed to be a high-low skirt, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make another cut in it. I like it as is – boho chic goodness :)

DIY Temporary Tattoo Fun!

June 28, 2012 / 1 Comment

This DIY is more of an experiment rather than step-by-step instructions — I recently purchased some printable temporary tattoo paper from Silhouette and it’s the best thing ever! Quick and easy, so many possibilities and no painful commitments ;)

I used an anchor font and printed a few different kinds…

Customized notebooks DIY

June 09, 2012 / 2 Comments

Materials: notebooks, magazine cutouts or pictures, rubber cement, scissors, duct tape, colored construction paper, letter stickers (optional)

For this project I dug up old catalogs from Roxy, I found these had the best pictures and I just had to use them (thanks Roxy)! One note to mention, make sure your photo is larger than the surface of the notebook. Folding the excess edges will give it a nice finished look – as if straight from the store!

Gather your materials and make sure you have plenty of table (or floor) space to work on. Start by applying a generous coating of rubber cement to the back of your photo and to the face of your notebook. Coat the whole surface. Applying glue to both surfaces will assure it’s stuck for good.

Let it dry for few seconds, doesn’t have to be all the way. Carefully start placing your photo on the cover – *remember* once it’s down, it’s not going anywhere. Gently rub it out throughout the whole page.

Moving on to the inside page – apply more rubber cement along the edges where we will fold the photo. Make a diagonal cut at the corners (if using a round corner notebook) and gently fold inwards, repeat for other corner.

Now that our photo is safe and secure, cut a good chunk of duct tape (enough to fold inwards) and place it along the spine edge to cover the edge of the picture. Press gently and fold over to the back side.

Cut a rectangle piece from the tape in the center, fold one piece in the front and in the back, repeat for other side.

Grab some construction paper and measure the inside of your notebook, this will be a nice lining to the inside cover. *Optional step: I used a corner rounder from the craft store to add a rounded corner to the lining, you can do so with scissors as well. Apply rubber cement to both surfaces and glue together. That’s it!

To further personalize my new notebooks, I added some inspirational vinyl phrases cut on the Silhouette Cameo machine. These can be easily substituted with store-bought letters or plain markers.

To be quite honest, these came out better than expected! They look like fancy notebooks from Urban Outfitters (my original inspiration for this DIY).

Fair warning- you may want to customize all the notebooks in your desk. Use neon or pattern duct tape, mix and match colors, and even add a photo to the back of the notebook, knock yourself out! Overall time for this project was maybe 30 minutes. Once you’re in the groove, it’s smooth sailing :) ENJOY!

DIY: Boho Sandals

June 06, 2012 / 1 Comment

Materials needed: pair of sandals, scissors, needle & thread, ball fringe trim ($3.99/spool), gold ball chain

For this project I used an old pair of Forever 21 sandals. I like the gladiator look but on warmer days it felt like wearing full shoes. Before putting on my boho touches, I cut off a few leather pieces to open up the foot area.

Before & after, looks much better!

The whole process took about an hour and a half. Each piece of trim and chain was sewn on by hand with a regular needle and thread. I matched the red for my trim and used as close of a brown to the leather as I had.

Looking at the final product, you cannot see where the chain connects to the straps

Magic!

Overall I’m very pleased with the final product – my fingers hurt to prove it! This project may take a little bit more patience but it’s so worth it, you can get the same expensive look of those fancy brand sandals but on the cheaps! Have fun with it :)

Side note: I may add some jingle bells to the zippers just for kicks.
